A Northern Vision
The linoleum block prints I create are inspired by the beauty, wilderness and mystery that is Alaska. I arrived in Alaska in 1989 to work as a river guide and instantly felt that I had found my true home. I have been exploring Sarah the "Great Land" by kayak, dogsled, on skis, and by foot ever since. The mountains, rivers, people, and wild creatures of the north fascinate me and energize my creative spirit. I work intuitively- what I see and experience mingles inside my head with imagination, memory, and dream creating a stew of visual ideas. Images continually bubble up from this mental stew and emerge to take the form of a sketch and eventually a print, part of my unfolding personal mythology- my northern vision. I choose to make hand colored linoleum block prints because I enjoy both carving and painting and like the effect I can achieve by combining these two techniques. I am interested in making art that feels good to look at and conveys joy, mystery, timelessness, simplicity, and peace. Working on the illustrations for my first children's book, "Granite", was a wonderful experience and I hope to illustrate more books in the future.
I live in Fairbanks, Alaska with my husband Tom, a research scientist, daughter Siri Elizabeth (born on 4/28/07), and fabulous dogs Zephyr and Lila.
